Don’t crops get plenty of sulfur from smokestack emissions?

Answer:

Years ago, crops received a good dose of sulfur from electric utilities that released sulfur dioxide through their smokestacks. However, clean air regulations have sharply reduced sulfur dioxide emissions, and as a result, crops are not getting as much “free” sulfur from the air.  Accordingly, agronomists are seeing more cases of sulfur deficiency in areas that were traditionally considered non-responsive to sulfur.
