Position Summary:
The Sr. R&D Technician is the primary day to day technical resource for operating and maintaining a new, state-of-the-art continuous nylon pilot plant. This position controls the operation, takes samples, handles raw materials, and prepares sample quantities of finished resin for internal and customer testing. This position must work effectively on shift work; the operation is continuous and will be staffed continuously when running an active trial/experiment. The operators must be able to perform all necessary duties regardless of which shift they are on. Shift assignments are subject to change with the needs of the business, but will be preceded with a 48-hour notice

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Start up and control the process using a computerized control system
  • Follow an experimental work plan and adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) developed for that work plan
  • Troubleshoot and respond to problems in the plant, including but not limited to chemical, electrical equipment, mechanical equipment, and operational as mentioned in SOPs
  • Prepare samples for analytical equipment and perform experiments
  • Safely handle chemicals and charge raw materials into system
  • Maintain the plant in a safe, clean, and orderly manner
  • Clean out equipment for shutdown and perform routine maintenance tasks (changing a filter, valves, running tubing, basic wiring, etc.)
  • Build relationship of trust with subcontract workers, coworkers, and other scientist/engineers who direct and oversee R&D work
  • Readily and decisively provide suggestions and find resourceful ways to help others remove obstacles to high performance

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be prepared to work on-shift
  • At least 1 year of experience in basic mechanical troubleshooting/problem solving
  • Familiarity with industrial plant equipment and operations is necessary
  • Experience working with chemicals is strongly preferred
    Experience with MS Office (Excel, Word and Powerpoint)

Additional Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in related field preferred, but not required
  • Experience working with PLC or other process control interfaces 
  • Experience with Experion preferred
  • Ability to focus on the most important priorities
