Position Summary: The Chemist will work as part of the team supporting a 24/7 plant operation through direct support, in-process analytical support, finished product, and research process chemistry.  This role will provide technical direction to support the business/operations strategy and plant chemistry/operation’s needs.  This position plays a key plant support role and in support of downstream customers of all Hopewell based products. This role is responsible for troubleshooting plant issues and giving recommendations and driving continuous improvements.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Primary operator of laboratory development equipment operating to support the development of chemistries and processes. 
  • Serve as resident expert on critical chemistries produced at the site. Research process chemistry and unit operations for existing products.
  • Work within teams to create processes, methods, and perform bench scale studies to support plant longer term improvement ideas in areas such as safety, yields, rates, and capacity as well as troubleshooting of quality and process excursions.
  • Share best analytical practices and knowledge with internal customers and stakeholders.
  • Provide expertise and knowledge sharing on the process chemistry, design intention, operating philosophy, and core manufacturing technology.
  • Serve as back-up support for QA chemists/leader when needed, including troubleshooting and maintenance support for laboratory instrumentation, technician training and quality system support, and providing weekend, holiday and off-hour support as needed/assigned.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, MS or PHD preferred 
  • 8 + years of chemicals or petro-chemicals R&D, process technology, and/or Quality Assurance Lab experience

 

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in the use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of other laboratory instrumentation: spectrophotometers, ICP-OES, auto titrators, refractometers, density analyzers, viscometers, pH meters, conductivity meters, ISEs, TOCs.
  • Skilled in data interpretation using SPC/SQC techniques; 6-sigma green belt certification a plus
  • Experience with quality management systems such as ISO-9001 a plus
  • Must be self-motivated and goal-oriented with proven success working independently and in a multi-functional team environment.
  • Must be a results-oriented with the ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams in a fast paced, results oriented matrix organization delivering on complex technical issuers 
  • Experience with LIMS and SAP is preferred.
