Can plants take up ammonium nitrogen?

Answer:

Yes – plants can take up both nitrate and ammonium nitrogen. The proportion of each they take up depends on several factors, such as temperature, oxygen level, pH level, plant species and  growth stage. For example, during the early vegetative stages, plants prefer ammonium nitrogen. Furthermore, several species have been found to do best under mixed nitrogen nutrition (ammonium and nitrate nitrogen).
