At AdvanSix, we believe in building a strong future by investing in the next generation of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) leaders. This year, our Frankford plant was proud to host students from Philadelphia’s Science Leadership Academy (SLA). While AdvanSix has always had a robust internship program across its sites, this was the Frankford site’s first formal internship program with the local high school.
AdvanSix Frankford welcomed three exceptional juniors from SLA’s Career and Technical Education Engineering Program: Jackson, Amelia and Miles. Hosting students from our Bridesburg and nearby Port Richmond communities was a new way to collaborate with our neighbors.
As their program concluded in June, the interns delivered presentations reflecting on their experiences. Speaking in front of plant team members, SLA staff and community guests, they shared how their time at AdvanSix expanded their understanding of engineering and provided a clearer picture of a future in this field.
“My time spent at AdvanSix has shown me how to operate in a real-world environment,” said Jackson. “One of my dreams is to work in the engineering field… so being able to have this experience and see what it is actually like was really meaningful for me.”
The event also honored SLA engineering teacher, John Kamal, who is retiring after decades of inspiring future engineers.
“Everybody wants to be on the AdvanSix internship because of the leadership and the fact that you care for them so much and they learn so much,” said Kamal.
A special shoutout goes to Kevin Leong, Environmental Engineer at Frankford, whose mentorship made a lasting impact on the students. The students also connected with Drexel University co-op students working at the plant, gaining valuable advice on navigating college applications and choosing the right engineering path.
STEM education plays a critical role in shaping a skilled workforce that can meet the needs of our evolving industry and connecting with local schools and universities helps us ensure we’re all growing together.
