How does ammonium sulfate compare against urea in wheat production?
One of the most obvious benefits of ammonium sulfate when compared to urea is that, in addition to nitrogen, it also supplies sulfur. Wheat research has shown that sufficient sulfur levels are needed for maximum test weights, protein and yield levels. It is also well known that flour made from low-sulfur-content wheat performs poorly in the bakery. Additionally, nitrogen from ammonium sulfate is more resistant to losses to the environment than urea, a fact that has been widely documented.
Regarding application, ammonium sulfate may be applied as a straight material or in combination with other fertilizer sources, including urea.
