How much lime is needed to neutralize the acidity created by 200 pounds of ammonium sulfate?
Based on the Association of Official Analytical Chemists’ (AOAC) adopted figures, in order to neutralize 200 pounds of ammonium sulfate per acre, 226 pounds of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) per acre would be required (5.4 kilograms of CaCO3 for every kilogram of nitrogen). Nevertheless, the AOAC value does not consider the effect of soil texture. Applying 200 pounds of ammonium sulfate on clayey soil will have less of an acidifying effect than the same amount of ammonium sulfate applied to a sandy soil given the higher buffering capacity – the resistance to changes in pH – of clayey soils.
