I am looking for a solution to aid in the breakdown of corn stalks in Iowa, as they didn’t break down in past winters. Can ammonium sulfate help with this? I was considering putting it on standing stalks that will be vertically tilled next spring before I plant soybeans.

Answer:

I am aware of several Midwest consultants who are successfully using 125 to 150 pounds of ammonium sulfate per acre to stimulate corn residue decomposition in the fall. The key is to apply it while temperatures are still fairly warm, since bacterial activity slows down significantly with cold temperatures.
