What is the acidification effect of ammonium sulfate placed in a band, such as with strip-till?
The acidification effect of ammonium sulfate applied in a band will depend on several factors – particularly its rate of application and the buffer capacity of the soil in question. Having said that, by applying ammonium sulfate in a band, you are concentrating the acidity produced within that band. This explains additional positive effects – other than nitrogen and sulfur nutrition – often reported from the application of ammonium sulfate in starter bands. By concentrating the acidity produced within the vicinity of the future seedling, micronutrient and phosphorus availability can be enhanced.
